The blog world is oversaturated. There are hundreds of thousands of blogs. Even if you niche down, there are still thousands: mom blogs, fashion blogs, photo blogs, travel blogs, lifestyle blogs. This is the reality of the creative space. The same goes for my work as a musician. There’s plenty of people who can play piano, and read music at similar skill levels. So, the main thing that is going to set YOU apart from anyone else, is being unabashedly YOU.
For my anniversary, we took a couple’s trip to the Thousand Islands. I’m not the most travelled person, but Thousand Islands has to be one of the most scenic places that I’ve ever visited. Just less than a 3 hour drive from home exists this beautiful NY paradise, an archipelago in the St Lawrence River – literally more than 1000 islands. The views are almost unreal, and it seriously is so perfect for a romantic little getaway.
When I came home from the hospital, and looked at my body in the mirror, I felt gross. I had delivered a beautiful, healthy baby boy, but if you were to see me, you’d think I was still carrying him. I knew it was stupid of me to obsess over my body just days after my delivery, but I did.
I see my children, my mouthy but smart daughter who has the most extensive vocabulary for a 5 year old, and my rambunctious but charmingly persistent son, who will climb and fall until he falls no more. I worry about how they will be perceived in the world. When you’re black, your skin tends to show before your qualities do. Being black is the first impression. It is your descriptor. You are your best friend’s black friend. You are the smartest black kid in your class. You are the black girl in the office. You are always black before you are anything else. Not my rules, but society’s.
